Repeal Real ID legislation: May 1, 2009

http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/bills/display_ps.asp?ld=1357&PID=1456&snum=124 Last year Maine overturned our VERY strong opposition to Real ID when we succumbed to Homeland Security wunderkind Michael Chertoff's blackmail threats to keep Mainers off airplanes and out of federal buildings if we did not adopt Real ID. Just one short year before we were the first in the nation to say NO to Real ID. That law is still on the books but has been made null and void by the blackmail induced law passed last year. As it turns out; the other states that held firm were NOT kept off airplanes or out of federal buildings. We blinked. We lost. Those of us who worked to oppose Real ID last year have a bill in this year to REPEAL the Real ID law that forced us into compliance with this very bad law. Here is the language of that bill. PLEASE come to the State House on May 1st to testify in support of the repeal. This is a very good overall story on Maine's recently passed Real ID law, the federal Real ID Act of 2005 and both the implications and realities of both.
